At the beginning of the 20th century, the Serbian Army introduced a practical grey uniform for its soldiers. However, by the outbreak of the war, it was far from possible to equip the entire army with the new uniform. Only one-third of the soldiers were provided with the uniforms of 1908, one-third received only caps and coats, and one-third fought in traditional folk costumes.
