Various rank and titular flags were used during the Austro-Hungarian monarchy to indicate the presence of an important member of the ruling dynasty at various military events. The Emperor, the Empress and the Archduke had their own flags according to the model of 1894. The Emperor’s flag was the most spectacular, where the basic Austro-Hungarian symbol was complimented by seven crowns. The Empress’s flag had four crowns, and the Archduke’s flag only contained the mentioned symbol. The motif is printed on both sides of a fine woollen fabric, which allowed easy transport of the large object. This flag was used by the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, Franz Ferdinand, Archduke of Austria-Este (1863–1914).
