The principle of a trench rifle made possible to open fire from the trenches without the necessity to uncover shooter’s silhouette to the enemy. Although the Dutch Army did not participate in WWI, the artillery factories (Artillerie-Inrichtingen) in Hembrug developed a trench rifle with a detachable periscope which was named M. 95 Loopgraafgeweer. The number of copies manufactured is not known, but only three copies remain in collections around the world. The butt plate and trigger guard of a standard gun are attached to a frame construction with a wooden handle. On the right side of the butt is a holder of a periscopic sight.
