At first glance, the members of the Czechoslovak legions in Italy did not differ from the members of the standard Italian army that provided their clothes, equipment and armament. The only differences can be seen in the rank insignia and the national white and red colours on the uniform. During the Czechoslovak legions’ operations in Italy, efforts were made to at least partially distinguish the Czechoslovaks from the native Italian soldiers. These tendencies were put into practice in November 1918 with the introduction of a new uniform, insignia and an entire rank system, with which the surviving legionaries were to return to the restored state. The uniform kept the typical Italian military headgear, the “mountain” hat, which legionaries were entitled to wear for acts of heroism. The equipment included Italian steel helmets (Lippmann type).
