Even after the outbreak of World War I, the cavalry regiments of the Austro-Hungarian Army kept their traditional colourful uniforms. However, a number of modifications were made. These were not apparent at first sight, but significantly improved the properties of the clothing. This is also the case of the uhlan jacket on display, made by Josef Szallay in Vienna in September 1914, which has been improved with insulation and large internal pockets. The owner of the jacket was the Czech nobleman Ernst of Schwarzenberg (11 October 1892--18 December 1979), a lieutenant of Imperial Uhlan Regiment No. 2. The jacket was made on 14 September 1914 before the owner left for the front.
