03 Backplate of Tournament Armour for Joust, Nuremberg, c. 1500

The backplate is composed of two parts, a plain plate to which a narrow culet piece with leather flaps on the sides is bolted. This leather extension was used to fix the tournament culet to the body with leather straps. There are two holes in the centre of the upper back, probably used to attach the clamping mechanism of the tournament helmet. The remains of the straps in the upper part of the backplate (in the shoulder area) are not original. The connection to the front part of the backplate in this type of armour was usually secured with metal belts with a pin and a cotter pin, as is also evident from the preserved holes in this part of the backplate.
On the left shoulder, the armour is signed with the guild mark of the city of Nuremberg and the master's mark of Wilhelm von Worms the Elder.
