This charred torso of an M60 machine gun was a direct witness to an armed clash between Taliban fighters and a patrol of members of the 601st Special Forces Group operating in Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. The incident took place in the Uruzgan province. During the ambush, the insurgents seized the element of surprise and used RPG-7 to disable one of the Land Rover vehicles. The car was struck between the headlights from an estimated distance of 150–200 metres; the vehicle’s crew was protected by the engine block which stopped the missile. In the ensuing confused firefight, the Czech soldiers managed to repel the aggressors’ attack and coordinated their retreat to safety.
