The oldest of the four functional left leg replacements, which were used by the member of the Czechoslovak Legions in Italy Jan Jinek (1898-1960) during his lifetime. In 1916 Jan Jinek enlisted in the 4th Regiment of Tyrolean Imperial Hunters. On 19 June 1917 in the Battle of Monte Ortigara in Italy, he was wounded in the left leg by grenade shrapnel and then captured. His left leg was amputated above the knee. He then passed through a series of Italian hospitals until he ended up in Foligno in 1918. There he joined the Czechoslovak Legions in October of the same year and served at the Depository Company of the 35th Infantry Regiment. He returned home at the end of 1918, and he was discharged from the army in October 1921.
