Probably the best known and most frequently depicted uniform of Franz Ferdinand d’Este is the general service uniform. Franz Ferdinand d’Este used to wear it to military manoeuvres and inspection tours, including his last one in Sarajevo.
The jacket with a double-breasted fastening is made of fine light blue fabric with red trim. The collar and cuff hems are made of scarlet red cloth with gilt edging. The collar also bears the rank insignia, consisting of two triple silver stars. The left front is covered with decoration attachments. On the left and right shoulders, there is a thin string used to firmly attach an order sash.
Two identical jackets have survived in the collections of the Military History Institute, one of which was made on 29 May 1914, less than a month before the Sarajevo assassination.
