The war (combat) hammer, operated with one hand, was part of the equipment of mounted warriors from the 13th century. However, it did not become more common until the 16th and 17th centuries, when it became one of the most widely used weapons in the world. However, in Eastern Europe and the Orient, it never achieved the popularity it had in Western and Central Europe. The lighter Eastern European and Oriental types of amour, made of different materials, did not need the intensity of a blow from a war hammer to penetrate.
