The design features a hinged closure locked by a swivel lug with a control lever on the left side. The pistol barrel and body are made of bronze alloy, components of the trigger and striking mechanisms are made of steel. It has a single-action trigger mechanism.
The Mk III signal pistol was introduced into armature by the British army in 1911 and replaced the previous model Mk II that had a steel body and barrel. In 1915, the design underwent modifications to the locking element and in December 1916, the barrel was extended and the muzzle was expanded to prevent the shooter’s hand from slipping into the area in front of the barrel during charging. The resulting version was designated as Mk III* and was also produced by W. W. Greener in addition to the parent company Webley & Scott in London and Birmingham by the end of the war. This exhibit was produced by the Webley & Scott arms factory.
