The lengthy reloading of muzzle-loaders forced gunsmiths to search for designs of multi-shot weapons, allowing the user to achieve higher rate of fire. One solution was to place multiple rounds in a single barrel in succession. The pistol shown here has three touch-holes in each barrel, the rear two of which can be closed with slide gates. The first, second and third bullets were fired sequentially, and when the barrel was rotated (released by pressing the lever in front of the trigger-guard), three bullets from the second barrel were fired in the same manner. Before each shot was fired, it was necessary to reload the powder into the pan, which was expedited by a small powder magazine located in the steel.
