This Austro-Hungarian lantern served as a trench warmer and light. During WWI I, soldiers used it inside trenches for light and as a warming device. It has a cylindrical shape and consists of two parts. The upper part is metal and can be slid out; it was used as a heater. Inside is a candle stand. In the middle wooden part waxed paper is folded. When it is pulled down, a kind of lantern is formed, which served as a cover to dim the light. Its structure is made of three metal legs covered in metal meshes. When folded, the legs are hidden in the wooden part. A metal flat handle with a spike is used to hang or attach the heater.
