The sheet metal signboard comes from what was probably the first permanent military bakery in Bohemia. They were built by French soldiers after their arrival in Prague in 1741 in today’s Hybernská Street, during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740–1748). After the departure of the French, the building became the property of the Austrian Army and was used as a storehouse for flour. In 1764 the warehouse was converted into a large-scale military bakery which was demolished in 1902. The signboard bears a golden inscription in French around the edge saying “L’Art de vaincre est perdu sans l’art de subsister. L’an 1742” (The art of winning is lost without the art of feeding. 1742.)
