Paired pistols stored in a cartridge are usually considered duelling pistols, but they can also be travel or target pistols. Even Johann Christoph Kuchenreiter’s pistols have a number of features not found in duelling pistols, such as the trigger is equipped with a tensioner, the sight has one fixed and two folding plates, the armorial plate (on the neck of the stock from above) can be removed by turning it and an extension stock can be inserted into the bed underneath.
The pistols are unconventionally placed in a cartridge with the barrels facing the same direction (not against each other) and besides the usual accessories (powder magazine, loading tool, bullet casting pliers, screwdriver, hammer, mallet for hammering the bullet into the barrel) the cartridge contains not only an extension stock, but also a mirror, inkwell, sprinkler and two small glass bottles.
Johann Christoph Kuchenreiter (1755–1818) was the court gunsmith of the princely house of Thurn-taxis, based in Reich since 1748.
